Structural-Visceral Approaches: Thoracic Interrelationships

Credits:   Category 1.21 CE Hours

Instructor:

Bruce Schonfeld & Jan Sultan

Course Description:

"What is the nature of the interface of structure and viscera and how does it impact the practice of Structural Integration?" - Jan Sultan

Especially in the context of competent musculoskeletal and biopsychosocial care, visceral restrictions can be the key underlying issue, the proverbial 'anatomical elephant in the room’ causing dysbalance. In this class, we will examine the relationships between the intra-thoracic organs and membranes from the visceral neck, to the diaphragm, and their relationships to the ribcage, and shoulder girdle. Motion continuity throughout the container and the contents will be our strong focus with an anatomical emphasis on the heart, lungs, pleura, and pericardium. Systems symbiosis is the objective. Appropriate for beginners and seasoned SI practitioners alike, the visceral anatomy associated with this class is conceptually organized within the same general architectural framework of Dr. Rolf's sessions 1-6.

This class offers options to adjunct the recipe as well as structural-visceral strategies to Post-10 Work. Structural Visceral Approaches to the Thorax is consistent and cohesive with a "Principles Approach" to SI, as developed by Sultan, Salveson, and Maitland. Students will learn valuable clinical reasoning skills and practical techniques through physical demonstrations and supervised exchanges between class participants. In addition, there will be a workbook, slide presentations of anatomy, and lecture time.

Instructor Bio:

Having both studied Visceral Osteopathy/Manipulation with French Osteopaths Didier Prat DO, Alain Croibier DO, Olivier Bazin DO, and Jean-Pierre Barral DO directly, Jan and Bruce will provide a broad spectrum of experience, theory, and technique to promote mobility and continuity across the structural-visceral continuum.

Jan Sultan first trained with Ida Rolf in 1969 and was invited by her to teach in 1975. Jan took his first class with Jean-Pierre Barral in 1987. A voracious student and lifelong learner, Jan has studied manual therapeutics of the organs, membranes and nervous system over a lifetime.

Fascinated by the inter-relationship between the container and its contents, Bruce Schonfeld was certified in Rolfing Structural Integration in 1994. He has studied Visceral Osteopathy since 1996. Bruce took his first class with Jean-Pierre Barral in 2000 and has logged over 300 hours with him directly since then.
