Presented by: Jeffrey Burch
(2019)

Introduction to Human embryology starting with the formation of the egg and continuing step by step through the first 2 1/2 weeks of development.

Beginning with the development of the egg, with its long pause, we will follow through fertilization and implantation of the embryo. Steps of differentiation of growth will begin with the first simple differentiation and continue into the expanding vocabulary of the building blocks of the body. There will be a focus on what each of the first three cell type layers will differentiate into in maturity and the fascinating story of how they get there. This first webinar will follow development through the formation of the foundational layers of tissue and their early differentiation. Follow up webinars will continue the story.

Body Rewilding: A Movement Class for Restoring and Savoring Natural Human Movement

Presented by: Ruthie Fraser

Join me for somatic explorations that weave together structure and play. This class offers a brief taste of Body Rewilding, a unique synthesis of Structural Integration principles, Yoga, Voice Dialogue, Somatic Experiencing, and my original kinesthetic lessons. We will explore the architecture of the body, find gravity as a resource, and imprint healthy coordination. We will also diversify our movement vocabulary, lean into impulses of kinesthetic longing and personal nourishment, and experiment with the physical expression of archetypes within us. These are tangible exercises that you can teach your clients. Some of these activities have a biomechanics or functional focus, and others are more improvisational and invite the mover to inhabit their bodies with curiosity and playfulness. In Body Rewilding practices, we merge structure and play by bringing a touch of playfulness into the structural emphasis and bringing a touch of structural order into the play emphasis.

Mental Imagery and Polyvagal Theory: Increase Your Client's Sense of Safety to Maximize Results
Presented by: Monica Canducci

The Polyvagal Theory explains how in every situation and interaction we can feel either safe or threatened, and points to the importance of co-regulation to help our clients achieve self-regulation, neuropsychological, and structural changes - meaning the desired and needed transformation. The more we are able to create a safe environment, starting by optimizing our own self-regulation and finding the most appropriate strategies for each client according to their background and life experiences, the more our work is effective. The use of simple strategies to improve our self-regulation and the use of appropriate mental images in the communication with our client can help us create the most functional context to support our client’s changes, making our practice more effective.

Remember Who You Are? Exploring Safety, Resiliency and Inclusion in Structural Integration

Presented by: Kirstie Segarra

An invitation to heal intergenerational and racial trauma through a somatic journey of discovering who we are as people of a culture that built its ideals and wealth on black and brown bodies with enslaved ancestry. This course is intended as a resource for inviting each of us to do our work to understand the impacts of racism, slavery, sexism and non-inclusivity within our culture and how we may do our own work to become more humane in how we practice. You will be guided through somatic exercises to explore your own relations then have an opportunity to share in small groups. We must know ourselves, our ancestry story and feel how this impacts our body in the present to come into wholeness in our profession of Structural Integration. This is not a comprehensive resource, just a beginning on a life long journey to heal and create better practices in our field of relations..

Navigating the Insurance World: Understanding the Basics of Billing

Presented by: Jason and Nancy Prince

Insurance billing is the process of submitting claims to insurance companies for payment for services. It is a complex and time-consuming process that requires a good understanding of insurance policies and procedures.  The process of becoming a provider to bill insurance can be complex as well, but it is essential if you want to be able to bill insurance companies for the services you provide.  We will be covering the steps of becoming a provider and things to pay attention to during this process. We also have a unique opportunity to support our veterans and those that have served our country. They have unique health challenges and need access to bodywork and the potential benefits it can provide.

So You Want To Be A Mentor

Presented by: Liz Stewart

Imagine if within our SI community there were multiple layers of support. From the time you think about choosing a school until you graduate, there is help and guidance along the way. And then.... once you step out into the real world with clients, sessions, business etc. you still have a support system in place for as long as you desire. That's not how it currently works. Bummer! As an SI community, we can look at fascia as an endless web, why not expand that metaphor to have an endless web of support for practitioners and teachers? Many of us don't like to talk much, yet we have to with our clients, even if it is minimally. Talking can be integrative, especially after a challenging client or business/practice/ethical issue. In this webinar Liz will present a few ideas and concepts about mentoring, and invite you to see if becoming a mentor would be a path of interest for you.

The Puzzle of Muscle Spasm

Presented by: Ritchie Mintz

The call will come one day if it hasn't already: "My back is out!!!" What to do when someone says, "I'm down on my back!"? A back spasm is one of the most humbling and debilitating conditions a human can experience. It literally ruins your whole day, and it can last for weeks. The first back spasm I ever saw was in a college friend who got carried to the emergency room on a door. I couldn't understand how something seemingly unprovoked could cause such pain... until years later when it happened to me. Now, after 44 years of SI practice, I get it. Join me and we'll talk about what muscle spasms are and what we, as structural integrators, can do about them.

An Intro to the Mystery of the Psoas/Rhomboid Balance

Presented by: Ales Urbanczik

In Ida Rolf's view the human legs start at the front of the lumbo-dorsal hinge at the interlacing of psoas and crura fibers. She likened this to "BEING" Just above the lumbo-dorsal hinge, in the back of the body, she suggested that the rhomboids control shoulder and arm movements. She postulated a 'KOAN' for one of the goals in sessions 8 & 9 - to find the best possible balance between: Psoas and Rhomboids i.e. Lordosis and Kyphosis, Being and Doing.

Prínciples of the Polyvagal Embodiment

Presented by: Herbert Grassman

Polyvagal Embodiment Training (PET) is based on the foundations of Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory. PET training offers a body-oriented approach to solving stress-related disorders and their effects on psychosomatic behavior. Current neuroscientific research emphasizes how important one's own bodily experiences and interaction in a social context are for self-regulation and neuropsychological changes. In every situation and interaction, we feel either safe or threatened. The constant alertness of the nervous system leads to a chronic activation of the protection-seeking musculature and acts like a frozen structure in our body. Our interventions take on the character of neuronal training. Through the interoceptive and proprioceptive practice of the neuronal activation states, defensive tendencies weaken and states of calm spontaneously appear as a reaction to a natural survival program. Through the application of the Polyvagal Principles and their resource development tools, participants begin to develop a deeper body awareness.

Embodied Supervision and Mentoring

Presented by: Liz Stewart

In bodywork we touch, so why would we need to sit and talk about our work? Supervision can expand our sense of professional competence, confidence, decrease professional isolation, provide support for what we do and how we work, functions as an incubator for integrating all parts of ourselves into our work. A big idea is integrating all parts of our self as the practitioner and with guidance from a skilled mentor/supervisor we can build a support system individually, in small groups and eventually in our field so that our fascial network can extend to a connectivity that is also supportive to us as practitioners.… talking helps to integrate.

Unraveling Fascial Rotation Patterns

Presented by: Jean Louise Green

Have you noticed how differently your clients’ feet and legs lie on the treatment room table in a supine position? I have been super pleased about that lately, as I see more and more of my clients lying supine on the table with both of their feet and toes pointing straight up! Why is that significant to me? Because it is an indicator of how thoroughly and successfully we have been addressing the myofascial patterns of rotation in a 3-dimensional manner in their body. Less twist in their body means less strain. Less strain means more freedom, ease, and connection with subtler life force energies through their Line! Fascial tissue rotation patterns are the result of how the body adapts to strain. For years I have been observing them in my own body and addressing them in the bodies of my clients. This process has been teaching me and it has been so effective and educational for my clients, that I realized that I needed to share it with other practitioners.

How I address rotation patterns in the body helps my clients understand them. It provides a template for them to optimize their own body mechanics and minimize putting those rotation patterns back in. This empowers the clients to make even better choices in how they manage their own bodies and supports lasting results in their Structural Integration work.

Fascial Layers in the Basic 10-Series

Presented by: Aleš Urbanczik

Actual manipulative work with fascia calls to mind the lowly onion. Layer lies within layer. Deeper layers can be affected only as more superficial ones lose the rigidity that is the signature of imbalance.” IPR, A Contribution to the Understanding of Stress, Confin. psychiat. 16: 69-79 (1973).

When we speak about the individual sessions of the Basic Series we usually speak of muscles and not of fascial layers. We usually say we are working e.g. "on the trapezius”. Peeling an onion however would mean separating, in the above example, the fascial layer surrounding the trapezius, from e.g. the fascial layer surrounding the levator scapulae. Using the information from Carla Stecco's Functional Atlas of the Human Fascial System we will take a look at the layering of fascia and the invested muscular structure of each layer.

Recognizing Musculoskeletal Pain

Presented by: Jeffrey Burch

For each internal organ, there is a distinctive pattern of pain referral to musculoskeletal structures. This has been well mapped and described. The organ problem creating the musculoskeletal pain can be either current pathology in the organ or fibrosity from prior problems. Knowing these pain patterns and associated signs and symptoms can lead to both making appropriate medical referrals and knowing where to work on organ support structures and glide planes to reduce pain and improve mobility. This webinar is an in-depth introduction to these pain referral patterns. The book Differential Diagnosis in Physical Therapy by Catherine Goodman and Teresa Snyder will be extensively referenced in this webinar. Additional concepts from French Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral will also be presented.

Neurofascial Integration

Presented by: Herbert Grassmann

There is a great need for a psychological and neurobiological understanding of bodily processes. The ongoing interdisciplinary dispute and newest research findings underline the important role of fascia in the field of proprioception, interoception, and nociception. If the fascia is one of our richest sensory organs, what do we know about the sensory capacity of fascia?

From the perspective of somatic psychotherapy, we are familiar with working with the sensory system. Psychological and neurobiological principles help us to understand the exciting relationship between Neuropsychology and Fascia. Most professional education is focused on specific techniques to elicit change, however, little attention is paid to "the container in which change happens". It's crucial that providers working to facilitate therapeutic change understand how the body stores stress, trauma, and chronic pain, and the subsequent impact on receptivity to change.

Self-work: how the practical work we do on ourselves can improve our practice,
the results we achieve, and our clients’ body-mind health

Presented by: Monica Canducci

Self-work is fundamental for those who practice Structural Integration. It is not only a very important way to keep working actively on ourselves, but also to educate our clients on the ownership of their body. If it’s important to receive work, regularly or occasionally, and it’s even more important to develop a responsible and proactive attitude towards our general body-mind health.

The easiest work we can do on ourselves and teach our clients can be a combination of self-massage, breathing, and movement explorations, integrated with the use of simple mental images. This would improve not only our clients’ posture and the way they deal with gravity, but increase also their sense of general wellbeing, self-awareness, and body image. Moreover, in case some clients would feel uncomfortable receiving some specific work, or cannot receive the work in person, we can teach them how to work on themselves under our supervision, in person, or remotely.

The Together Body | Part 3 of Triology

Presented by: Ritchie Mintz, Certified Advanced Rolfer®

Early in the 21st century, I worked with some Olympic® level swimmers who were ramping up for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. In applying Dr. Rolf’s notions to these elite athletes, I had a series of revelations that rocked my understanding of the together body. Much of what I came to know was not new information; it was stuff I had heard or been taught before. But what was new was the feeling and experience of highly trained, top-level athletes as random bodies. I was able to feel how their random parts felt isolated and remote from their whole, despite these athletes being in top condition. That was when I saw that our fascially ignorant world has no idea what a together body really is. That was when I knew that our society did not even have the words to describe a really together body. So, in its confusion about the together body, society latched onto a word… a wrong word… to describe what it thought is a together body. Come and find out what that wrong word is and why it is misdirected. You will learn why society's efforts to create "together" bodies actually takes bodies further apart. What is a truly together body? How do we get there? Come join me and I'll be glad to tell you how I create truly together bodies.

An easy and effective nerve treatment method

Presented by: Jeffrey Burch

Building on Jean-Pierre Barral DO & Alain Croibier DO's methods for treating the connective tissue components of nerves, several other.workers have developed a range of fine methods to assess the elasticity and glide of nerves, and to treat restrictions found.

Jeffrey Burch has added a relatively simple yet highly effective method. This method has the added advantage of not directly contacting the nerve, which adds an element of safety. Another advantage of this method is it provides the practitioner a way to recognize and work with the frequent anatomic variants in the levels at which nerve roots exit the spine. This method does not replace any other method, rather it is one more tool in the practitioner's kit.

In this webinar Jeffrey will present the principles of this method, followed by examples of how to apply the method to many different nerves.

Leg Torsion Assessment as a Guide to Realistic Goals for Each Structural Integration Client
Presented by: Jeffrey Burch

The knee and ankle are both hinge joints, however, during growth and development, the axes of rotation of the two joints are only transiently parallel to each other. At birth, the axis of the ankle joint is internally rotated about 15 degrees with respect to the knee joint. During the growth and development, the tibia gradually twists along its length so that usually at about age 5-6 the two axes are parallel. In adulthood, any amount between 5 and 18 degrees of external rotation of the axis of the lake joint with respect to the axis of the knee joint is considered normal. Beyond this "normal" amount of tibial torsion, common range variants are from no change where the infantile 15 degrees of internal rotation is retained in adulthood, to 25 degrees of external rotation. The two legs in one person never have the same amount of tibial torsion.

The femur undergoes a similar torsion along its length during growth and development with that substantial differences between people. Again, the two femurs in one person are rarely the same. Since the hip is not a hinge joint, femoral torsion is calibrated a different way.

This webinar teaches a practical method to assess the torsion of each femur and each tibia to develop a realistic picture of these aspects of the native architecture of each person's legs. Knowing this feature of the uniqueness of each client's bony architecture provides a guide to assisting each client to find ease in their body.

Masses and Spaces Considering the Body as a 3-Dimensional Puzzle
Presented by: Michael Feldman

Human bodies consist of parts: Bones, Muscles, Organs, Glands, Nerves, etc… Each is wrapped in a woven, fibrous material called connective tissue which shape and protect. These are the Masses. Between these structures, the Spaces, is another form of connective tissue, a web of fluid-filled filaments. Tubes of water acting as a supple, buoyant network for the nervous system to communicate and adapt to the needs and demands of each and every mass suspended in it, balancing the body both structurally and physiologically.

Considering structures and relationships via the alignment of the space between the masses, rather than the shape or function of the structures themselves, might allow for an alternative view to assess new strategies for both manual and movement therapies. Using touch as a tactile reference to determine and restore coherent alignment, and observing the masses in relation to each other while in motion, may provide a new way of cuing the body to more efficient movement patterns.

Structural Integration & Voice Dialogue: A Fertile Intersection
Presented by: Ruthie Fraser

About: In this workshop, I will share the basic principles of Voice Dialogue, and how a Voice Dialogue lens can assist and enhance the Structural Integration process. I will give an overview of Voice Dialogue and offer some case studies for further understanding. We will engage in a group activity to briefly experience the Voice Dialogue work internally, and then I will open up the space for questions.

I have been practicing Structural Integration for the past 14 years. For the past seven, I have also been a Voice Dialogue facilitator. I continue to experiment with blending these methodologies for interested clients. I have found that the practice of Voice Dialogue can bring momentum, dimension, insight, and efficacy into the Structural Integration journey.

Radiation Fibrosis: A Calling for SI
Presented by: Ritchie Mintz

About: Dr. Rolf had a special name for human bodies that had not been processed in the 10-session series of her work. She called them "random". Random bodies. If you understand the concept of the random body, what it is, and what that means, then a body ravaged by radiation is a very special kind of random body. It is a body that is at the outer extremes of "random body". (If you aren't completely clear on the concept of the random body, please consider my book: From Adam & Eve to Ida Rolf - What Is the Random Body? Available at www.RitchieMintz.com.)

Radiation Fibrosis and its evil twin, Droop Neck Syndrome, are no exceptions to any of our principles and practices. But they are a super exaggeration of all the troubles in any tissues we have ever touched. You might think that you can work on it like any other tissues that came before. The trouble is that one of the hallmarks of the irradiated body is hyper-sensitivity and hyper-vigilance. How do you unwind someone who winces and gasps with every touch?

I developed three techniques that get me past the hyper-sensitivity and the hyper-vigilance. These three methods allow me to work the 10-series in a way that these very special clients can tolerate. When I realized that, it changed how I touch everybody else.

How do I know all this? My wife, Gloria, is a 3-time cancer survivor who was irradiated like the core of Chernobyl. Let's say that I learned it all out of school and off the clock, every day for the last 20 years (and counting!)

Come and hear what I've learned. There's a tsunami of this work out there. The world needs us.

Essential Body Awareness: Proprioceptive Foundations for Sustainable SI
Presented by: Mary Bond

About: Join us for an experiential webinar. We'll explore body awareness lessons relevant to the 10-series. Participants will need space to move around and a chair that allows hip joints to be positioned at a higher level than knees. The workshop is open to IASI members, their clients, and other somatic educators—anyone interested in standing, walking, and breathing with more efficiency and comfort.

When we speak about teaching “movement” for SI, we are really talking about helping our clients notice the sensations of what they are doing and find ways to exchange unsupportive body use for habits that serve them better. Many SI practitioners do not have time or the training to offer sensorimotor sessions per se but wish to find ways to incorporate basic functional awareness into their SI sessions. The first step is to have a clear understanding and personal embodiment of supportive body use. Your own functional integration is the foundation for identifying the sensations that your client needs to feel. Body awareness “lessons” can be brief if you know how to get to the heart of things. This is Mary Bond’s special expertise and it is her joy to share her insights with you.

Practical Tools and Suggestions for Working Remotely with Your Clients: Utilizing Motor Imagery
Presented by: Monica Canducci

About: Motor Imagery can be a precious tool for all bodyworkers who want to integrate sensory-motor imagery in their practice and/or adapt and improve their skills in order to work remotely. Specific protocols and a series of guided movement explorations can both increase the effectiveness of in-person sessions and enable Structural Integration practitioners to provide online one-on-one and group sessions.

In fact, specific sensory-motor imagery applied to movement and self-massage can be used by Structural Integration practitioners to activate their clients’ proprioceptive, interoceptive, and motor neural networks, promoting the achievement of new skills both perception and coordination-related all while working remotely.

Assessing for Sleep Disordered Breathing
Presented by: Jeffrey Burch

About: Twenty percent of the population has some form of sleep apnea or closely related conditions (SDB). The proportion of people with chronic pain who have SDB is much higher. The low oxygen levels and sleep disturbance of any form of SDB damages tissue contributing to chronic pain. SDB has many other negative health effects. The ongoing tissue damage works against what we are trying to accomplish with SI. The clinical presentation of SDB is highly variable. Learning to recognize the signs of SDB and referring clients for testing and treatment leads to greater client health and comfort and greater success toward the goals of SI.
